Ben Kuroki was one of the few Nisei admitted to the Army Air Corps. He earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses and was acclaimed as the first Nisei war hero after flying 30 missions in Europe as a tailgunner and top turret gunner aboard a B-24. The government sent him on a tour to Heart Mountain and two other camps in an effort to promote recruitment and help curb the growing draft resistance. He was later subpoenaed as a witness in the conspiracy trial of the Fair Play Committee leaders. Kuroki asked for duty in the Pacific and after being initially refused, became the only Nisei to serve in active combat with the Air Corps in the Pacific Theater, flying 28 more missions over Japan. After the war he spoke to audiences nationwide and was the subject of a 1946 biography, "BOY FROM NEBRASKA." He went into journalism, becoming the first Japanese American editor of a general newspaper in Nebraska. He later edited newspapers in suburban Michigan and Southern California. This is a montage I put together for Memorial Day this year. The music is The Gunner's Dream by Pink Floyd, words and music by Roger Waters. The pictures are from the national archives for the most part, they all are from WWII (except for stock photos of Arlington and a Mushroom Cloud photo). This montage, like the song, strives to illustrate the sacrifice our fathers, uncles, grandfathers, great grandfathers, etc made in Europe and the Pacific. They didn't fight because they had to, not even because they were asked to, they fought to put an end to Fascism and oppression, to provide a better world for us. It was a just war, and the sacrifice of our dead for the cause purchased each one of us our freedom from fear and oppression. The song was written to help us to not lose sight of their dream... of the vision of what they wanted for the future... what they paid for with their blood to insure that we have. We shouldn't squander our freedom over petty disputes. They fought a war that was intended to fix what went wrong with the first world war, the first war to end all wars. The Youngest Railsplitter is the story of Lewis Bennett who lied about his age and joined the military during World War II to become the youngest member of the 84th Division. He served as a machine gunner for D company of the 334th regiment. This is the first part to the story of this amazing veteran from Grants, New Mexico. Michael Gambino stretched the black gown over his shoulders. Oh boy, he grunted as Winchester Schools Superintendent Bill McAlduff helped the 82-year-old World War II veteran into the traditional graduates garb. Gambino never thought hed don a cap and gown. Ill have to go to college next, he joked while closing the final clasp. Born in Winchester on March 1, 1927, Gambino grew up in a home at 38 Swanton St. He finished the tenth grade at the age of 17, but instead of enjoying a carefree summer before advancing on to his junior year at Winchester High School, he followed in his brother Jimmys footsteps and joined the US Navy. An atomic bomb would eventually help steer Gambino clear of fierce fighting in the Pacific. Over the decades since, after a lifetime spent working and building a family, he couldnt help but feel something had been left unfinished. Weve had a number of folks who left school at 16, 17, 18 years old and went into World War II, said School Committee Chairwoman Sarah Swiger, who attended a small, but poignant ceremony with a single expressed purpose, held in the superintendents office last Thursday morning. During the making of HBO's THE PACIFIC, I served as a researcher with the duty of providing period film footage clips such as this one - shot on the same locations as the 10 part mini-series follows: Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Now that the series is airing you might find these short clips interesting. I appolojize for the lack of audio, yet they were only intended as simple visual aids for the Prop and Art Departments. Nevertheless, by watching them you'll get an idea of what it was like in these remote island battlefield locations.
